Elementary #famousline #A2ZChallenge #BlogchatterA2Z

Okay, admittedly, my fandom continues. From Satyajit Ray to Sherlock Holmes. I was introduced to Sherlock Holmes when I was in the 3rd or the 4th standard, the book, The Hound Of Baskervilles. The description of the hound in the book still manages to send a chill down my spine. In fact I realize that Sherlock Holmes and the Famous Five had so completely consumed me that I read nothing else till I was out of college. I remember I would pride myself on identifying a Holmes story by even a dialogue.

In fact I spent my entire adolescent years practising the science of deduction…remember Holmes telling Watson…’when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?’ and boy it works, for example…I have already missed posting these on the days they were supposed to be posted on, I am not planning on giving up my job to become a full time blogger, I have been putting in 12-14 hour workdays every day  and yet I am hell bent on finishing A2Z…so you see the only plausible reason is ofcourse that I am mad (improbable but true nonetheless)

And while there are many dialogues or lines from Holmes the most quoted one happens to be ‘Elementary, my dear Watson’, its quoted far and wide but the interesting part is Holmes never said that…

The dialogue really comes from the story ‘The Crooked Man’ and this is how it goes

‘I have the advantage of knowing your habits, my dear Watson’, said he. ‘When your round is a short one you walk, and when t is a long one you use a hansom. As I perceive that your boots, although used, are by no means dirty, I cannot doubt that you are at present busy enough to justify the hansom.’

‘Excellent’ I cried

‘Elementary’ said he. ‘It is one of those instances where the reader can produce an effect which seems remarkable to hi neighbour, because the latter has missed the one little point, which is the basis of the deduction.’

As a matter of fact if you think back to his detection methods, so much of it is just based on the elementary, common sensical things. And yet when faced with a problem, common sense is probably the last thing we use to solve it…who knows, maybe the problem arose only because we didn’t pay attention to the most elementary stuff.

So this A2Z let uncomplicate our lives…lets look at the ‘Elementary’

  1. I enjoyed the way you connected the Sherlock books with the importance of the elementary in life. I am a Sherlock fan too – of both the books and the TV series – although the latter is courtesy primarily to Benedict C ❤

    1. That would be benedict cumberbatch…I like what Robert Downey Jr has done with the charcter too.. But benedict I think looks the part more…. whos your favourite?
